Bobby Jindal birth control op-ed spurs wide-range of reactions ...

Gov. Bobby Jindal said oral contraceptives should be available over-the-counter in a Thursday evening op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. The staunch pro-life Catholic Republican said this would lower health-care costs, prevent government intrusion into citizens' lives and fight the influence of big pharmaceutical companies.

Reactions to the op-ed have been varied and have ranged from whole-scale support to confusion over how this fits in the Republican governor's wider policy positions. See below for the reactions.

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS -- Communications Director Sarah Comiskey McDonald:
"We disagree with the governor's opinion because, as the Catholic Church teaches, contraception is always wrong."

PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACTION FUND -- President Cecile Richards:
"We completely agree that access to birth control should not be a political issue, and the vast majority of voters from both parties do, too. We welcome Governor Jindal's thoughtful contributions to the conversation on women's health. Unfortunately, his remarks stand in contrast to some of his colleagues in Congress who have tried repeatedly to eliminate the nation's family planning program, which helps provide low-income women with access to affordable birth control.? These and other legislative attacks on women's health are all too real, as we've seen just this week in Michigan.? We hope that Governor Jindal will help keep policymakers at the state and federal level out of women's personal health care decisions."

REDSTATE.COM EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ERIC ERICKSON:
"Bobby Jindal is talking sense in the contraception debate." (via Twitter)

Believe it or not, modern houses are constructed better than their predecessors

Believe it or not, modern houses are constructed better than their predecessors

Arrol Gellner
Inman News?

When I hear people say, "They sure don't build houses like they used to," I think to myself, "Yeah, and it's a good thing, too."

Granted, the quality of many items in new homes -- doors, paint, hardware, and so on -- can't measure up to that of their vintage counterparts. But when it comes to actual structure and infrastructure, there's no comparison.

Starting at the bottom of things (the foundation), modern houses are already way ahead. Prewar foundations had little or no reinforcing steel in them, which is why sticking doors and crooked floors are so common in vintage houses. Thanks to increasingly stringent codes for earthquake safety, modern foundations contain plenty of reinforcement, which has the added benefit of them being level and in one piece.

Building codes also require today's houses to be much more robustly framed than their predecessors, many of which had shockingly weak structures. Victorian houses, for instance, typically sat atop tottering "cripple walls" that made these already spindly and top-heavy structures even more susceptible to earthquakes, hurricanes and flood damage. Today, the use of inexpensive metal framing connectors such as joist hangers and tie straps produce far stronger houses at a very modest additional cost.

Modern building infrastructure systems such as plumbing, heating and electrical are also leagues beyond their vintage counterparts. Take plumbing systems, for example -- prewar homes typically used rust- and occlusion-prone galvanized steel water piping. Most modern plumbing systems, on the other hand, use durable, trouble-free copper.

Likewise, houses predating 1940 or so employed knob-and-tube wiring systems with cloth-insulated wires that were embrittled by heat and attractive to rodents. Worse, these systems were protected by simple plug fuses that could be (and often were) circumvented by clueless owners -- the infamous "penny in the fuse box" trick that led to many an electrical fire.

Modern home electrical systems, on the other hand, use circuit breakers that can't be tampered with. They also provide ample electrical capacity and plenty of outlets, doing away with the tangles of dangerous extension cords so ubiquitous in old houses.

And speaking of fires, it's no accident that fewer deadly fires occur in newer homes than in older ones. Rather, it's because today's building codes require interlinked smoke detectors, and many codes now also require fire sprinklers as well. Together, these improvements have dramatically reduced the incidence of fatal house fires.

Lastly, and perhaps most apparent to us in day-to-day life, new houses are far and away more comfortable and energy efficient than their old-time predecessors. Although we like to think of homes from the "good old days" as being warm and snug, most lacked wall and attic insulation to conserve heat and instead relied on huge, wasteful gas furnaces to keep them warm.

Thanks to modern energy efficiency standards, however, gone are the days of huge furnaces that lost more than half of their heat energy up the chimney or by radiation from poorly insulated ductwork. Today's high-efficiency furnaces, coupled with other features such as mandatory floor, wall and ceiling insulation, mean modern houses are many times more energy efficient than grandma's cottage was.

Given all these improvements, next time you hear someone say, "They don't build houses like they used to," tell them they're absolutely right.

Consumers are more likely to make emotional instead of objective assessments when the outcomes are closer to the present time than when they are further away in the future, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"The proximity of a decision's outcome increases consumer reliance on feelings when making decisions. Feelings are relied upon more when the outcome is closer in time because these feelings appear to be more informative in such situations," write authors Hannah H. Chang (Singapore Management University) and Michel Tuan Pham (Columbia University).

From which snack to buy to which apartment to rent, we base many of our decisions on either feelings or objective assessment. The option that appeals more to our feelings is often not the one that "makes more sense." When do consumers rely more on their feelings than objective assessments? And how does the proximity of the decision outcome influence consumer decision-making? For example, when looking for an apartment to rent, some consumers may decide which apartment to rent only a week before moving in, while others may decide several months in advance.

In one study, college students were asked to imagine that they were about to graduate, had found a well-paying job, and were looking for an apartment to rent after graduation. They were then given a choice between an apartment that appeals more to their feelings (a smaller, prettier apartment with better views) and an option that is objectively better (a bigger, more conveniently located apartment). Compared to college juniors and those who imagined graduating a year later, college seniors and those who imagined graduating and moving into an apartment next month were more likely to choose the former option.

"Companies should consider the time between consumer decision-making and consumption. When consumers will be deciding immediately prior to consumption (choosing an entre at a restaurant or a mobile phone plan), companies should focus on messages that appeal to consumers' feelings. When they will be deciding well in advance (choosing a retirement plan or booking flights), companies should focus less on emotional appeals and instead emphasize messages that appeal to objective assessments," the authors conclude.

Researchers Create Contact Lens With LCD Display : Science/Tech ...

Call it your future eye phone.

Contact lenses that display information have long been a trope in science fiction. However, science is one step closer toward making that a reality. Researchers from Ghent University in Belgium have developed a way to convert contact lenses into LCD screens that can project information. The technology could rapidly change medicine and even cosmetics.

    Follow us

The LCD screen was built directly onto the contact lens. In order to do so, the researchers behind the technology needed to create a special type of material.

Previous contact lens displays were limited to just a few pixels that could be used to display an image. The technology developed by Herbert De Smet and his team utilizes the entire contact lens to project an image.

Some speculate that the technology could spell out the end of the smart phone or revolutionize the personal computer. Google, Microsoft, and Apple?are all currently developing glasses?that contain a built-in computer. The technology could conceivably mean that users could read text messages right on the lens. It could also pose the possibility of displaying driving directions or street signs.

The technology also has medical implications. The technology could be used to create adaptable sunglasses, which would cut down on sunlight-related eye problems. It also could control the transmission of light toward the eye's retina in the event of iris-related problems.

Finally, it could also revolutionize cosmetics. The lens could be used to turn the eye's iris any color that the user wanted, allowing users to change the color according to their moods.

The technology is quite a bit away from being ready for human eyes. Though the technology exists for placing the image on the lens, developers would still need to trick the brain into thinking that the image was farther away from the eye than it really was.

Humorously, the researchers have only managed to make the lens display one thing: dollar signs, in a joke about the way cartoon characters' eyes display dollar signs when they think of a money-making scheme.

Commercial ultrasonic frequency devices do not repel bed bugs, study suggests

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Alternative means of controlling urban insect pests by using ultrasonic frequencies are available and marketed to the public. However, few of these devices have been demonstrated as being effective in repelling insect pests such as mosquitoes, cockroaches, or ants. Despite the lack of evidence for the efficacy of such devices, they continue to be sold and new versions targeting bed bugs are readily available.

However, according to a soon-to-be-published article in the Journal of Economic Entomology, commercial devices that produce ultrasound frequencies are NOT promising tools for repelling bed bugs. In "Efficacy of Commercially Available Ultrasonic Pest Repellent Devices to Affect Behavior of Bed Bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae)," , authors K. M. Yturralde and R. W. Hofstetter report the results of their tests of four commercially available electronic pest repellent devices designed to repel insect and mammalian pests by using sound.

The devices, which were purchased online, were used according to manufacturers' instructions. A sound arena was created for each ultrasonic device, in addition to a control arena which featured no sound. However, the authors found that there were no significant differences in the number of bed bugs observed in the control (no sound) and sound arenas, and that bed bugs were neither deterred nor attracted to the arena with the sound device.

The authors conclude that the ultrasonic devices may not have deterred or attracted bed bugs because they may not have produced the right combination of frequencies. Bed bugs are commonly exposed to frequencies made by their host species (humans) and by appliances and machines found in homes. Therefore, it may be possible that bed bugs also would exploit sounds made by their human hosts, such as breathing or snoring. Future studies of bed bug bioacoustics may be served well by using low-frequency sounds produced by host species.

PostalPix Now Offering Personalized iPhone Case ? Order on the Go with Mobile App

Doug is a nerd from way back, falling for a Commodore PET at the age of 15, and never looking back. Riding the nerd wave, he got a Computer Science degree and entered the tech industry at a young age, deciding after a year and a half of front-line phone technical support that he should try something, *anything* else. He settled on technical writing, and has been cranking out documentation for companies like Unisys, SGI, Cisco, Juniper, and many others ever since. He is nothing short of ecstatic to be working for H-P from his home base in Austin.

Secrets to exchanging timeshares into any resort in Interval ...

You are here: Home / General / Secrets to exchanging timeshares into any resort in Interval International

Secrets to exchanging timeshares into any resort in Interval InternationalRemember when you bought your timeshare and your salesperson showed you the Interval International (II) directory? You were led to believe that all you had to do was deposit your week, request where you want to go and you would be instantly confirmed to stay in a beautifully appointed villa in a 5 star resort.

What you have found is that you can?t get anything you want! You called your resort and got no help there. You called II and all they said was to request more in advance.

The people who do will learn how to stay in the BEST timeshares in the world while you continue to struggle year after year.

I know how frustrating it is when every time you call II with your request they tell you "Not available". So you start a search request, wait 6-12 months or more for a confirmation, and out of desperation, end up taking a resort you really didn?t want in the first place. Does this sound familiar to you?

And to add insult to injury, when you get there, the quality of the "Resort" is less than desirable. You may have even had a year where you paid your maintenance fees but lost your week and ended up paying for a hotel on vacation.

When you reached the breaking point and decided to sell you found you can?t sell it for even half of what you paid! In the back of your mind you feel that you have made a horrible financial decision and will continue to feel that way until you do something.

You?ve spent thousands of dollars buying your timeshare and you?ve had little or no luck exchanging it! In reality, very few people know how to exchange their timeshare correctly.

Android users seeking USB drivers for Windows targeted with malware infecting PCs, mobile devices

Cybercriminals have started targeting Android device owners looking to connect and modify their smartphones and tablets. They are using searches for phrases like ?Windows Android drivers? and everything in between to serve up malware for Windows computers as well as malware for Android devices distributed via fake Google Play stores.

One such Yahoo search result is for the Samsung Galaxy GIO S5660 but naturally it is very likely cybercriminals are targeting more than just one device and on more than just one search engine. Nevertheless, visiting the Russian URL in question automatically downloads a file called install.exe, detected by GFI as as Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT.

The Trojan modifies Internet Explorer?s homepage to a sign-up page for a Russian ?escort? site. Yet the scam doesn?t stop there. If a user accesses the same site via an Android device, he or she is led to various different malicious sites.

One of them takes the user to Russian sites containing fake search results. All the links on the search pages direct users to one of five fake Google Play stores:

android malware 730x583 Android users seeking USB drivers for Windows targeted with malware infecting PCs, mobile devices

GFI says: ?Thinking that they?re on the actual Google Play website, it is highly likely that users may end up downloading malware onto their mobile devices.? We don?t think it?s ?highly likely,? especially given that the searcher set out looking for USB drivers, but it wouldn?t be the first time Android users are duped by fake Google Play stores.

Either way, there are two kinds of Android Trojan premium SMS apps being distributed on these fake stores, both detected as Trojan.AndroidOS.Generic.A. Like the majority of Android malware, these malicious apps sends expensive international text messages to earn their creators revenue. Some variants even connect to a Command & Control (C&C) server to send and retrieve data, as well as await further instructions.

    GFI offers the following advice:

These fake markets are looking more and more sleek and professional, so extra care is advised. Only visit and download genuine apps from the real Google Play website by keying in play.google.com to the address bar of your mobile or PC internet browser. This ensures that you will not be directed to sites that merely look like the actual site. This also ensures that the readily available apps you wish to download are not malicious.

Yet GFI has forgotten about the other side of the story. Windows users looking for Android USB drivers should heed the same advice: only navigate to official sources to download tools for your phone. These include the site for your phone?s manufacturer as well as your carrier?s site.

(AP) ? Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o was looking forward to a break after a five-city-in-five-days tour, during which he has become the most decorated player in college football.

"I'm just trying to get a workout in and get some sleep," he said Friday about his plans for the night.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel seemed to have more energy when he arrived at a midtown Manhattan hotel with his fellow Heisman Trophy finalist. In fairness, Johnny Football's week hasn't been nearly as hectic, though this trip to New York city is different from the first time he visited with his family when he was young.

"It's just taking it up a whole 'nother level, but happy to be here," he said.

Manziel and Te'o spent about 30 minutes getting grilled by dozens of reporters in a cramped conference room, posed for some pictures with the big bronze statue that they are hoping to win and were quickly whisked away for more interviews and photo opportunities.

Manziel, Te'o or Collin Klein, the other finalists who couldn't make it to town Friday, each has a chance to be a Heisman first Saturday night.

Manziel is trying to be the first freshman to win the award. Te'o would be the first winner to play only defense. Klein would be Kansas State's first Heisman winner.

Manziel and Te'o were on the same flight from Orlando, Fla., where several college football awards were handed out last night. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback was just happy the 255-pound linebacker didn't try to record another sack when they met.

"He's a big guy," Manziel said, flashing a big smile from under his white Texas A&M baseball cap. "I thought he might stuff me in locker and beat me up a little bit."

The two hadn't had much time for sightseeing yet, but they did walk around Times Square some, saying hello to a few fans. They probably weren't too difficult to spot in their team issued warm-up gear.

"We've just been talking about goofy stuff. Playing video games. Playing Galaga. Just some things from back in the day. Messing around with each other," Manziel said. "Kind of seeing who is going to take more pictures. He's definitely taking that award right now."

Te'o is already going to need a huge trophy case to house his haul from this week. He has won six major awards, including the Maxwell as national player of the year. He'll try to become Notre Dame's eighth Heisman winner and first since Tim Brown in 1987.

"I can only imagine how I would feel if I win the Heisman," he said.

Charles Woodson of Michigan in 1997 is the closest thing to a true defensive player winning the Heisman. Woodson was a dominant cornerback, but he also returned punts and played a little receiver. That helped burnish his Heisman credentials.

Te'o is all linebacker. He leads the top-ranked Fighting Irish with 103 tackles and seven interceptions.

Klein was the front-runner for the Heisman for a good chunk of the season, but he played his worst game late in the season ? in a loss at Baylor ? and the momentum Manziel gained by leading Texas A&M to victory at Alabama has been tough to stop.

Manziel's numbers are hard to deny. He set a Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards, throwing for more than 3,000 and rushing for more than 1,000.

Klein, by comparison, averages about 100 fewer total yards per game (383-281) than Manziel.

A freshman has never won the Heisman. Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson came closest in 2004, finishing second by Southern California's Matt Leinart.

Manziel is a redshirt freshman, meaning he attended Texas A&M and practiced with the team but did not play last year. Still, he'd be the most inexperienced college player to win the sport's most prestigious award.

"It's surreal for me to sit here and think about that this early in my career," he said. "With what me and my teammates have gone through, with how they've played and how they've helped me to get to this point, it's just a testament to how good they are and how good they've been this year.

"Without them I wouldn't be here and that's the real story to all this."

The Mexican government has published an ecological planning program for the Gulf coast and Caribbean regions of the country, designed to combat climate change and to ensure the sustainable management of the region's natural resources, according to a release from the environment ministry, Semarnat.

The program, designed in conjunction with the governments of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucat?n and Quintana Roo states includes strategies to deal "with waste management, water management and the vulnerability of people and infrastructure" to natural phenomena.

As a result of climate change, the region is expected to be hit by increasing numbers of natural disasters such as drought, flooding and hurricanes over the coming years, states the program.

Sea levels are also expected to rise 13cm over the next 40 years putting wetlands and coastal lagoons at risk.

Changes in land use of forested areas for installation of infrastructure or construction of residential areas will make these areas particularly vulnerable to rises in sea levels and other natural phenomena, according to the program.

Other factors expected to put pressure on the region include rising population numbers with the attendant increases in garbage and wastewater generation and the cost of infrastructure to manage disposal or treatment.

The region's ports and oil and gas industries also put additional pressure on ecosystems in the area, states the program.

Will Insurance on A-Rod's Contract Save The Yankees - FanGraphs

After his monster MVP season in 2007, Alex Rodriguez signed a new 10-year deal with the Yankees for $275 million, plus an additional $30 million in marketing incentives linked to home-run milestones. So far, the Yankees have paid Rodriguez $161 million, leaving $114 million on the contract. That breaks down to $28 million for 2013, $25 million for 2014, $21 million for 2015 and $20 million in 2016 and 2017.

This week,?we learned?A-Rod will undergo left-hip surgery surgery in January to repair a torn labrum, a bone impingement and a cyst. The surgery is being delayed to give Rodriguez time for physical therapy to strengthen the hip. Recovery time is estimated at four to six months, which means a return to the Yankees lineup in June ? at the earliest.

But what if A-Rod?s recovery doesn?t go as planned? What if the surgery isn?t successful? What if A-Rod doesn?t recuperate as quickly as expected? What if A-Rod doesn?t play in 2013? What if his career is over?

There?s been plenty said about what this might mean for the Yankees on the field, but I want to address what this means for the franchise?s bank account. After all, the money ? in particular, the goal of keeping the payroll under $189 million in 2014 to avoid the luxury tax ? is driving the Yankees? decision-making about who plays where on the field. Specifically, there?s a question about insurance.

It?s been reported the Yankees have insurance on A-Rod?s contract. But what does that mean? Well, without the actual contract, we can?t know for sure. Because insurance is a matter of contract, the devil is often in the details. We do know a fair bit, though, about how these insurance contracts generally work, so we?ll start there.

An insurance contract on a professional baseball player works like most insurance policies: The insured pays a monthly or yearly premium for a set amount of coverage to be paid by the insurer if one of the risks covered in the contract comes to pass. There may be exclusions for injuries sustained during particularly risky activity (such as skydiving) or for pre-existing conditions. The contract is for a set term of months or years, after which it must be renewed. And there?s a deductible ? an amount the insured pays before the insurer?s obligations kick in.

The Washington Post?s Adam Kilgore recently?explained some of the details on how these insurance policies work:

For their largest contracts, major league teams purchase policies that will cover them if a star player misses extended time. ?The definition of large varies from team to team,? said Dan Burns, the president of Pro Financial Services, a leading underwriter. ?What?s not large for the Yankees may be large for the Nationals. And what?s large for the Nationals is very large for the Kansas City Royals.?

The policies differ based on team preferences. Some insurance kicks in if a player misses 60 regular season days, Burns said, while other policies activate only if the player misses an entire season. The percentage of the contract reimbursed also differs ? some teams only insure to recoup half of the contract for time missed, while other policies cover 80 percent of the salary.

Before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, it was common for teams to purchase insurance for the entirety of a player?s contract. But the insurance industry paid out billions and billions in 9/11-related claims, which led to a tightened insurance market. Now, even if a player?s contract covers five, six or seven years ? or, in A-Rod?s case, 10 years ? teams typically cannot insure the player for more than three years at a time. When the policy expires, the team can renew, but any new injuries the player suffered in that three-year window would be taken into account in the new policy.

We don?t know the start date for the Yankees? insurance contract on A-Rod, but for our discussion purposes, let?s assume it was purchased before the start of the 2012 season and covers a three-year term. Let?s also assume the Yankees chose to pay a higher premium in exchange for a small deductible ? meaning the policy would kick in if A-Rod remained on the disabled list for 60 consecutive days, as opposed to 90 or 120 days. Let?s also assume the Yankees insured the contract to the fullest amount possible ? say, 80% of A-Rod?s salary.

With such a policy in place ? and assuming all other policy terms were complied with ? the insurer would likely start paying out under the policy after the season?s first 75 days. The first 60 days A-Rod spent on the disabled list to start the season would count as the deductible. The next 15 days would count as the first pay period after the deductible was exhausted for which A-Rod?s services were unavailable to the Yankees due to injury (major-league ballplayers are paid on a semi-monthly basis). This process would continue unless ? and until ? A-Rod came off the DL. If he spent the entire 2013 season on the disabled list, the Yankees would potentially recoup in the range of $16 million. I reached that figure as follows: 80% of $28 million (A-Rod?s 2013 salary) equals $22.4 million. From that figure you subtract a little more than $6 million for the deductible; that?s approximately 80% of the amount A-Rod will be paid during the season?s first 60 days.

If Rodriguez?s injury forced him to retire, the Yankees could potentially recoup 80% of his 2014 salary ? or another $20 million. But the Yankees would not have insurance coverage for the 2015 to 2017 portion of A-Rod?s contract and would have to assume that loss as a sunk cost. Again, this is all based on my assumptions about the length of the contract, the deductible and the percentage of A-Rod?s salary covered under the policy.

The one thing an A-Rod insurance policy doesn?t give the Yankees may be the one thing they really want: luxury-tax relief. That?s because all of A-Rod?s salary from 2013 to 2017 will count toward the luxury tax in each of those seasons, even if the Yankees are reimbursed for a significant portion of that salary under the policy. So even if the insurance payout gives the Yankees the financial flexibility to sign or trade for players to replace A-Rod, the luxury tax still looms if the Yankees? payroll (including A-Rod?s salary and the replacement player(s) salary) exceeds $189 million in 2014.

Not all teams insure their most expensive players. And those that do insure against the risks of a season-ending or career-ending injury often hedge their bets with less coverage in exchange for a lower premium. Even if the Yankees bought the best policy available, there are risks. The insurer could challenge the timing of A-Rod?s injury or whether it?s related to surgery performed on A-Rod?s right hip in 2009. The Yankees and A-Rod could end up in a dispute over whether he should play after his rehabilitation is completed.

However this plays out, the Yankees will still be on the hook for A-Rod?s salary, and all of it will be counted against the luxury tax. Some teams just can never catch a break.

How common 'cat parasite' gets into human brain and influences human behavior

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? A new study demonstrates for the first time how the Toxoplasma gondii parasite enters the brain to influence its host's behavior. This research was led by researchers from the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden publishes December 6 in the Open Access journal PLOS Pathogens.

The Toxoplasma gondii parasite causes toxoplasmosis. The parasite is common and infects between 30 and 50 per cent of the global population. It also infects animals, especially domestic cats. Human infection is contracted by eating poorly cooked (infected) meat and handling cat feces. Toxoplasmosis first appears with mild flu-like symptoms in adults and otherwise healthy people before entering a chronic and dormant phase, which has previously been regarded as symptom-free. But when the immune system is weakened toxoplasmosis in the brain can be fatal. The fetus can be infected through the mother and because of this risk, pregnant women are recommended to avoid contact with cat litter boxes. Surprisingly, several studies in humans and mice have suggested that even in the dormant phase, the parasite can influence increasing risk taking and infected people show higher incidence of schizophrenia, anxiety and depression, which are broader public health concerns.

In their recent study Fuks et al. showed for the first time how the parasite enters the brain and increases the release of a neurotransmitter called GABA (gaba-Aminobutyric acid), that, amongst other effects, inhibits the sensation of fear and anxiety. In one laboratory experiment, human dendritic cells were infected with toxoplasma. After infection, the cells, which are a key component of the immune defense, began actively releasing GABA), In another experiment on live mice, the team was able to trace the movement of infected dendritic cells in the body after introducing the parasite into the brain, from where it spread and continued to affect the GABA system.

"For toxoplasma to make cells in the immune defense secrete GABA was as surprising as it was unexpected, and is very clever of the parasite," says Antonio Barragan, researcher at the Center for Infectious Medicine at Karolinska Institute and the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control. "It would now be worth studying the links that exist between toxoplasmosis, the GABA systems and major public health threats."

Congress Passes Patent Law Treaty Bill - The BLT: The Blog of ...

Congress has passed a bill that would implement two patent law treaties to help American businesses expand into foreign markets, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced today.

The House on Wednesday passed The Patent Law Treaties Implementation Act of 2012, co-authored by Leahy and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the top members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill will die if the White House does not sign it before the end of the year.

The Hague Agreement Concerning International Registration of Industrial Designs allows American creators to apply for design protection in all member countries by filing a single, standardized application, Leahy's office said in a release. The Patent Law Treaty limits the formalities different countries can require in patent applications, removing barriers that currently burden U.S. patent holders.

Hal Wegner, a Foley & Lardner partner in Washington who focuses on domestic and international patent issues, said the patent law treaty will have essentially zero impact on his practice, while the Hague Agreement will increase the term of design patents from fourteen years from grant to fifteen years from grant. "It's a very minor piece of legislation overall," he said.

Patent law attorneys are paying closer attention to a House bill that would alter some provisions of the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act. The House is scheduled to take up that bill, first introduced November 30, the week of December 17.

Feeling Guilty? Iyanla Vanzant Says It's A 'Wasted Emotion' (VIDEO)

Feeling guilty about something you did or said to someone? You're wasting your time, says relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant.

In an episode of "Oprah's Lifeclass," Iyanla explains why guilt "doesn't serve anything but the ego" and discusses how it differs from shame.

"I say they're cousins, kissing cousins," Iyanla tells Oprah about the two emotions. "Shame says there's something wrong with who I am. It's intrinsic... Guilt says there's something wrong with what I've done."

In this video, Iyanla lays out the three reasons people feel guilty. Plus, she offers a simple remedy to help you move past what she considers to be a wasted emotion:

"Acknowledge [what you've done]. Ask for forgiveness of yourself first and then of others if you can. Then, if you can do something to make amends, that will release you from the karmic tie to that action."

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is sticking with Colin Kaepernick as his starter under center - for now, anyway - as his team prepares for Sunday's home game with the Miami Dolphins. And, no, Alex Smith isn't out of this mix yet, either.

A day after a 16-13 overtime loss at St. Louis, Harbaugh accepted the blame for the fourth-quarter pitch that was fumbled by Kaepernick and led to Janoris Jenkins' 2-yard fumble return for a touchdown and ensuing 2-point conversion that tied the game. Harbaugh didn't call the play, but relayed it through the headset to Kaepernick.

Harbaugh says he saw positives in the way Kaepernick responded after the mistakes.

At 8-3-1, the 49ers might get a push in the NFC West from the Seahawks (7-5) down the stretch. The teams play at Seattle in the second-to-last game on Dec. 23.

Diamond Foods names new head of supply chain

(Reuters) - Diamond Foods Inc named David Colo as its new executive in charge of global manufacturing and procurement as the snack foods company looks to fix problems related to its supply chain, following an accounting scandal that hurt its ability to do business.

The maker of Emerald nuts, Kettle chips and Pop Secret popcorn restated financial results for fiscal years 2010 and 2011 in November after an internal probe found that it had accounted for some payments to farmers in the wrong fiscal periods.

The scandal, which led to the exits of former Chief Executive Michael Mendes and finance chief Steven Neil, dealt a blow to Diamond's relationship with walnut farmers, resulting in a drop in supply.

Colo, who will report directly to Diamond CEO Brian Driscoll, previously worked for seven years at ConAgra Foods Inc and spent 16 years before that at Nestle-Purina .

Diamond shares, which have lost more than 50 percent of their value this year, were little changed in extended trading after closing at $14.65 on the Nasdaq on Monday.

(AP) ? In the cluttered office where he's met with some of the nation's top politicians and preachers, penned rousing speeches and planned civil rights marches, the Rev. Jesse Jackson speaks so softly ? and with so little enunciation ? that one strains at times to hear him.

At 71, he still keeps a hectic schedule and speaks extemporaneously on everything from voting rights to hostages in Gambia. But the head of one of America's most prominent families struggles when addressing one thing: the son and heir to Jackson's political influence who abandoned his congressional seat last week because of mental health problems and two federal investigations into his political dealings.

Sitting in his office ? among photographs of mentor Martin Luther King ? the elder Jackson's body tenses, he sighs and his eyes drift off.

"My heart burns," he told The Associated Press. "As I always say to my children, champions have to play with pain. You can't just walk off the field because you're hurt."

Over the last 40-plus years, Jackson has played many roles ? barrier-breaking presidential candidate, international hostage negotiator and master orator. There was a time when his presence alone inspired swift action and attracted throngs of reporters. Now it's different.

These days, Jackson is more likely to seek out media attention rather than waiting for journalists to come to him. If his voice in national affairs is muted, it's also because reporters don't listen as closely as they used to.

"He's not the magnet for the press he once was," said David Bositis of the Washington-based Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, who has known Jackson for years.

Associates and historians say it's partly natural: Jackson is older, and the dynamics of civil rights activism have changed. His role as an inspiration for African-Americans has been altered by the rise of President Barack Obama and a new generation. But those who know him also attribute Jackson's lower-key role to the last three years of troubles surrounding his eldest son. And some are concerned that the son's woes could hurt the family's image and legacy.

"Yeah, things might get damaged a bit," said U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, a Chicago Democrat. "But you can't erase the fact that Jesse Jackson Sr. has gone into foreign countries and brought back hostages that the state department could not get." Jackson "has raised issues that nobody else would be raising at the time, and then ultimately other people would join in. And before you knew it, you had a movement."

The reverend groomed his namesake for the public stage, giving him name recognition and helping launch his career. The younger Jackson introduced his father during the 1988 Democratic National Convention. They co-authored a book. When Jackson Jr. took office in 1995, he was viewed as a rising star with potential to seek the nation's highest offices, following a trail blazed by his father. He held a spot on the powerful House Appropriations Committee and co-chaired President Barack Obama's first campaign.

Then, in late 2008, everything began to change.

The investigation that toppled former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich revealed that the younger Jackson may have been involved in discussions about raising money for the governor in exchange for an appointment to Obama's former Senate seat. Jackson ceased almost all public appearances, and a cloud of suspicion hung over him, even though he has never been formally charged with any wrongdoing.

Legal proceedings also revealed that Jackson Jr. had had an extramarital affair, the same type of indiscretion that embarrassed his father almost a decade earlier. Jackson Jr. remained under a House Ethics Committee investigation until his resignation last week and still may face its final report.

Then earlier this year, just after the arrest of a former campaign fundraiser connected to the Blagojevich allegations, Jackson disappeared on a mysterious medical leave, which the family later said was for treatment of bipolar disorder.

While the father won't address the son's legal issues, he said it was difficult to watch his child struggling with the decision to step down, something doctors at treatment facilities in Arizona and Minnesota recommended immediately. He's hopeful his son will recover soon and possibly return to public work.

In Chicago, questions are being asked about what political role the Jacksons will continue to play and whether they will try to influence who wins Jackson's House seat in a special election slated for the spring. Another of the reverend's five adult children, Jonathan Jackson, a Chicago State University business professor, is contemplating seeking the seat. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s wife, Sandi, a Chicago City Council member, has also been mentioned as a potential replacement, though she has remained conspicuously out of sight since her husband's resignation.

No matter who replaces Jackson in Congress, the reverend will almost certainly have to address more questions about his son.

"They're so tied to the hip, and I think that it will paint how people think of Jesse Jackson Sr.," said Holly Campbell, a 49-year-old woman who lives just south of Chicago and has been a longtime supporter of the family.

His presidential runs inspired her to vote. But she's felt something shift in her perception of the family, particularly after the allegations about the former congressman emerged. "I'm disappointed," she said.

The elder Jackson is still busy, but his work often escapes notice. While he's a sometimes-polarizing figure in the U.S., he is greeted in many places, including abroad, as an international statesman. He took credit for helping obtain the release of two Americans imprisoned in Gambia this year, though there was little international news coverage. During a recent protest about job-outsourcing with Illinois workers, Jackson intentionally got himself arrested for civil disobedience. His office supplied constant updates and photographs.

Jackson disputes that there's been any slowdown in his activities. He says he can't keep up with requests for help. Aides say 18-hour days aren't uncommon as he continues almost monthly overseas trips, a regular newspaper column and weekly live broadcasts. He says he's focused on equality and justice, as always, but he approaches things differently now.

Rather than organizing a rally for thousands of people, his work has moved into quieter areas, like the courts, often through his Rainbow PUSH Coalition, which he founded more than 30 years ago.

The Chicago headquarters is a virtual museum of Jackson's life, including photo cutouts of King and Jackson and framed headlines showcasing his work freeing hostages. On a recent weekday, a crowd of people ? including church leaders ? waited to meet with him.

He spent much of 2012 working on the issue of challenges to voter rights across the country. He also visited a Wisconsin Sikh temple after a fatal shooting. And he returned several times to join the workers' protests in northern Illinois.

Jackson acknowledges the changes in his tactics, news coverage and the wider world.

"The whole landscape has changed," he said. "The rules are different today."

That includes the nation electing and re-electing its first black president, which Jackson has complicated feelings about. He says he has always supported Obama ? having voted for him for state senator, U.S. senator and twice for president. But he also takes some credit for Obama's success, saying his own two presidential campaigns made it possible.

During the 2008 campaign, Jackson was caught on tape making crude remarks about Obama supposedly talking down to blacks. He apologized. The night Obama was first elected, Jackson was in the crowd at Grant Park, tears streaming down his face.

Jackson maintains that his family's legacy won't be damaged by his son's problems.

"We've served in this country" for decades, he said. "I don't think people are that fickle."
